OTHER FILM FACTS...

  • THE EVIL DEAD
"Within The Woods" was a 30 minute short used by Raimi to fund "The Evil Dead"

The original title for "The Evil Dead" was "Book of the dead", however Producer Irvin Shapiro asked for the title to be changed, as he reckoned kids would be turned off by the literary reference.

The budget for "The Evil Dead" was $US300,000.

After completing principal photography in the winter of 1979-1980, most of the actors left the production. However, there was still much of the film to be completed. Most of the second half of the film features Bruce Campbell and various stand-ins (or "shemps") to replace the actors who left.

  • SCREAM
The original title for the SCREAM was SCARY MOVIE but the producers thought SCARY MOVIE sounded like a comedy.

In 1994, while housesitting, Williamson was watching a Barbara Walters special on the Gainesville murders about a man in Florida who stalked and killed college kids. When he heard a noise and discovered an open window, Williamson called a friend for support as he walked through the house with a butcher knife.

Linda Blair makes a cameo as an obnoxious reporter.

The high school principal is Henry Winkler, the high school rebel "the Fonz" from Happy Days.

  • HALLOWEEN
The original title for this film was "The Babysitter Murders."

John Carpenter has cited both THE EXORCIST and SUSPIRIA as inspirations for the music in "Halloween".

Halloween, was originally envisioned by Bob Clark (of "Porky's" fame) and John Carpenter as a sequel to BLACK CHRISTMAS (1974) but negotiations fell through. Carpenter was given permission by Clark to use ideas that the two came up with for Halloween.

Due to its shoestring budget, the prop department had to use the cheapest mask that they could find in the costume store: a William Shatner mask, from the movie "The Devil's Rain." They later spray-painted the face white, teased out the hair, and reshaped the eyeholes.

Halloween was shot in 21 days in the spring of 1978. Made on a budget of $300,000, it became the highest-grossing independent movie ever made at that time. However, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (1974) holds the title for the highest grossing independent film ever.

Michael Myers' middle name is Audrey!

  • FRIDAY THE 13TH
FRIDAY THE 13TH was going to be a TV series until they decided to make it a movie.

Opened on the same day as THE SHINING.

Adrienne King got the role of Alice only after the original filmmakers gave up trying to land Sally Field.

The Australian video version, as released on the Warner Home Video label, is complete and uncut. Look for the cover depicting Alice leaning and resting on the side of the canoe, for this is the unedited version.

  • A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET
Director Wes Craven claims to have named Freddy Krueger after a kid who bullied him in school and to have based his appearance on a disfigured hobo who scared him as a youth.

The movie Nancy watches to stay awake is EVIL DEAD (1982).

Director Wes Craven's original concept for Freddy Krueger was considerably more gruesome, with teeth showing through the flesh over the jaw, puss running from the sores, and a part of the skull showing through the head.

In the scene where Nancy is sleeping at Tina's house and Freddy comes through the wall over the bed, Jason's hockey mask (from the FRIDAY THE 13TH films) can be seen.

Johnny Depp accompanied friend Jackie Earle Haley to the auditions, where he was spotted by director Wes Craven, who asked him if he'd like to read for the part.

Over 500 gallons of fake blood was used during the making of the film.
